THE IMPACT OF MOBILE-ASSISTED LANGUAGE LEARNING IN ENHANCING STUDENTS’ VOCABULARY LEARNING The Case of Second-Year LMD Students of English at Mohamed Kheider University of Biskra

Abstract

Abstract The mastery of the communicative competency is a powerful aspect of succeeding in the language learning. However, the majority of EFL learners seem to have some difficulties in acquiring vocabulary. That is, they have a lack of vocabulary background; they misspell words and mispronounce them. Therefore, this study aims at investigating the effects of Mobile Assisted Language Learning (MALL) approach on enhancing the competencies of EFL learners in vocabulary. Moreover, it seeks to examine this technique in enhancing students’ performance. The hypotheses of the present study suggest MALL as a successful learning tool to improve vocabulary to a high extent. The study aimed at investigating the vocabulary competency of a sample of Second Year LMD students. Therefore, a mixed-methods approach was adopted in this study. Two data gathering tools were used in order to elicit both learners’ and teachers’ perception of vocabulary importance and reactions about applying the suggested instruction. These tools included a students’ questionnaire and a teachers’ interview. After the analysis and interpretation of the data, the findings revealed that MALL instruction can help learners to improve their vocabulary competency. Also, the findings assert that the teachers and the learners do not highly use mobile devices inside the classroom; however, they both showed their encouragement and agreement of applying the MALL instruction in classrooms. Consequently, it can be noticed that the main hypothesis of the study has been confirmedالملخص یبدو أن إتقان الكفاءة التواصلیة نقطة قویة للنجاح في تعلم اللغة. وعلى ما یبدو، قد یواجھ غالبیة متعلمي اللغة الانجلیزیة كلغة أجنبیة بعض الصعوبات في تعلم المفردات. على سبیل المثال، لدیھم نقص في قاموس المفردات، أو یخطئون في تھجئتھا أو نطقھا. وفقا لذلك، یھدف ھذا العمل إلى دراسة تأثیر منھج (MALL Learning Language Assisted Mobile ( في تعزیز كفاءات متعلمي اللغة الانجلیزیة في تعلم المفردات. علاوة على ذلك، تسعى الدراسة إلى فحص ھذه الأدوات كأدوات داعمة تحسن في أداء الطلاب. تشیر فرضیات الدراسة إلى أن ھذه الأجھزة الالكترونیة تعتبر أدوات تعلیمیة ناجحة لتحسین تعلم المفردات إلى درجة عالیة. الإرشادات ھدفت للتحقق من كفاءة المفردات لعینة الدراسة (طلاب سنة ثانیة في الجامعة). لذلك، تم اعتماد منھج (MALL (في ھذه الدراسة. تم استخدام أداتین لجمع البیانات من اجل إدراك كل من المتعلمین والمدرسین لأھمیة المفردات وردود الفعل حول تطبیق التعلیمة المقترحة. تشمل ھذه الأدوات استبیان الطلاب ومقابلة الأساتذة. بعد تحلیل وتفسیر البیانات، كشفت النتائج إن الأداة المقترحة یمكن إن تساعد المتعلمین على تحسین كفاءتھم في المفردات. تؤكد النتائج أیضا إن المتعلمین و المعلمین لا یستخدمون الأجھزة المحمولة بشكل كبیر داخل الأقسام؛ و مع ذلك، اظھر كلاھما تشجیعاتھم لاستخدام الأجھزة المقترحة داخل الأقسام. و بالتالي، نلاحظ انھ تم تأكید الفرضیة الرئیسیة للدراسة.
