INVESTIGATING THE IMPORTANCE OF CRITICAL THINKING IN ENHANCING EFL STUDENTS ACDEMIC WRITING A Case of Master One Students of English at Mohamed Khider University of Biskra

Abstract

Abstract Critical thinking is generally deemed to be one of the central requirements and desired outcomes in students’ academic papers. Thus, learners’ writing products are generally evaluated based on their ability and success to manipulate and analyze information effectively. Apparently, the majority of EFL students at Mohamed Khider University come up with poor academic papers. This poorness is due to the difficulties that have not overcome yet. Students face difficulties in terms of organization and style, lack of sources and inability to understand, evaluate and analyze others’ ideas. Hence, this study is an attempt to investigate the importance and the usefulness of higher order critical thinking for EFL students to improve their academic writing. In this respect, we hypothesize that if EFL students become good critical thinkers, their academic writing would be improved. Moreover, to achieve the main purpose of this study, a qualitative approach was adopted and a case study was used as a strategy for this research work. Besides, in order to collect data for this descriptive study, two questionnaires have been used for both fifty (50) Master One students and twelve (12) teachers. After the analysis and discussion of the collected data, the obtained results revealed that possessing critical thinking skills helps students to improve their academic papers. Therefore, we can conclude that the previously stated hypothesis was confirmed and the findings were provedالملخص تهدف الدراست الحالَت إلي البحث فٌ مدى أهمَت التفكَر النقدً فٌ تطوٍر الكتابت األكادٍمَت بالنسبت لطلبت اللغت اإلنجلَزٍت فٌ جامعت محمد خَضر بسكرة ، حٌث أنه ٌتم تقٌٌم أعمال الطلبة بناءا على قدرتهم معالجة و تحلٌل األفكار بشكل فعال. لذالك فإن تطوٌر مهارات التفكٌر النقدي ٌعد من األولوٌات و ذالك لتجاوز التحدٌات و النقائص التً تواجه طلبة الدراسات العلٌا. و لتحقٌق الغرض الرئٌسً لهذه الدراسة و المتمثل فً تأكٌد أهمٌة مهارات التفكٌر النقدي فً تطوٌر الكتابة األكادٌمٌة فإن هذه األخٌرة تتكون من جزأٌن و هما الجزء النظري و الذي ٌسلط الضوء على كل من التفكٌر النقدي و أهم المهارات المتعلقة به و كذا الكتابة األكادٌمٌة، فً حٌن أن الجزء الثانً خصص للجانب التطبٌقً و المتمثل فً الدراسة المٌدانٌة، حٌث تم استخدام استبٌانٌن لكل من طلبة سنة أولى ماستر شعبة اإلنجلٌزٌة وكذا األساتذة. فً األخٌر فإن النتائج المتحصل علٌها بعد تحلٌل البٌانات قد بٌنت أن كال من األساتذة و الطلبة مدركون لمدى أهمٌة و فعالٌة التفكٌر النقدي فً تحسٌن و تطوٌر الكتابة األكادٌمٌة، و من هنا ٌمكن القول أن نتائج هذه الدراسة كانت إٌجابٌة.
