This research aims to shed light on the residential subdivisions, as a mode of urbanization characterizing almost all Algerian cities. The subdivision was, and remains the dominant mode of the growth of our agglomerations; it is one of the most appropriate built frameworks, where the citizen takes part in the effort of construction. It is also a means of urban development that meets the requirements of the quality of life. This form of operational urbanism, indeed, affects all aspects of social, economic and cultural life. However, the successive production of subdivisions, where the quantitative aspect takes precedence over the qualitative, has resulted in mediocrity in the urban form, a depreciated image of urbanity, and a spontaneous, even anarchic appropriation of space. Consequently, this study addresses the concept of quality of life within residential subdivisions, both in their urban and environmental dimensions. It attempts to identify the problems of housing estates in the city of Bechar, where the effort of increased production (residential subdivisions) has not often given the expected results. And this, before approaching the scientific demonstration inherent to the quality of these residential spaces and, to find tracks to ensure it (with of course what it implies as urban and environmental quality). This has allowed us to highlight the recurring problems at the level of residential subdivisions and, to identify on the other hand the reasons that are at the origin of the failures, even dysfunctions on the formal, functional and environmental levels.en_US
