Abstract

Football has developed significantly in recent years and has taken an upward trajectory in various aspects, making it a subject of interest for researchers and scientists. Their contributions, particularly in tactical aspects, have elevated the sport to new levels. Unlike in the early years when skill performance was predominant, modern football now emphasizes systematic and scientific planning, which has become a critical component of the game. Experts now view football from the perspective of efficiency and offensive effectiveness, focusing on strategies that can change the course of matches and determine outcomes. Set pieces have emerged as one of the most effective methods for scoring goals. Therefore, we conducted a modest study on set pieces and their impact on match outcomes. We applied this theory to some matches in the first round and the round of 16 of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d'Ivoire, and our observations revealed the following: In the first round: • The percentage of penalty kicks was 0.97%. • The percentage of corner kicks was 1.62%. • The percentage of direct and indirect free kicks was 0.32%. In the round of 16: • The percentage of penalty kicks was 1.27%. • The percentage of corner kicks was 0.00%. • The percentage of fouls was 0.62%. We used a descriptive analytical method suitable for the nature of the research and its problem. We deliberately selected a sample of eight round-of-16 matches, choosing teams based on their historical success in winning the championship. Indeed, the importance of set pieces was evident both in the first round and in the round of 16 matches, playing a significant role in determining the outcomes of most matches.
