The design of a retaining wall requires the application of active and passive earth pressure theories. Many researchers have carried out experimental, analytical and numerical work on earth pressure problems. In this study, series of two dimensional finite element analyses have been carried out using the software PLAXIS, to estimate the passive and active earth pressure coefficients, for various mechanical and geometrical configurations of backfill retained by a vertical rigid and smooth wall. The effect of backfill inclination and proximity of a slope are investigated. The results of the present study are compared with those available in the literatureen_US
