Abstract: The technique of earth construction is both very old and extremely widespread. The reasons for this are simple: the material is abundant everywhere, and can be used without complex technologies. We believe beforehand that the treatment of soils in cement has yelded different responses according to the nature of clay minerals. We have decided to verify this. For the purpose, we have selected various types of soil likely to constitute a representative sample of the types of clay that are most abundant at the earth's surface and are likely to be used as building materials for earth housing. In the course of preparing a specimens of compressed treated earth static compaction, we were able to follow the course of soil-cement reactions from the mechanical point of vue (wet and dry; tensile and compressive strengths). This approach has enabled us to determine the treatability of the soils and to rank them from best to worst: Kaolinites, Illites, Montmorillonites.
