Exploring Language Attitudes of the Algerian Scientific Disciplines' University students towards Foreign languages The Case of second Master Students at the Section of Biology in the University of El-Oued

Abstract

ABSTRACT The study of language attitudes is one of the major interests of sociolinguistics. In an attempt to gain insights into the Algerian complex sociolinguistic landscape and provide implications for language planning, the study at hand aims at exploring the attitudes of Algerian university students' of the scientific disciplines towards French and English, the policy applied concerning them, their use in their learning process, in addition to the factors behind their attitudes. To reach its objectives, the present study utilized a mixed method approach based on two direct instruments of data collection namely, a semi-structured questionnaire to investigate the participants' attitudes and a semi-structured interview to explore the factors behind them. The research population was a Master two biology students in El-Oued University from which a random sample of 37 students (n=37) were chosen to answer the questionnaire and 6 to conduct the interview. The findings of the study indicates complicated but generally negative attitudes towards French and positive ones towards English and major dissatisfaction with the current language policies concerning foreign languages. Based on these findings a group of implications for language planning were recommendedالملخص عن طريق دراسة التوجهات اللغوية و التي تعتبر من أهم فروع اللسانيات االجتماعية, تهدف هذه الدراسة إلى استكشاف الوض اللغوي االجتماعي بالجزائر و توفير معلومات قد تساعده في عملية التخطيط اللغوي في الجزائر مستقبال. هذه الرسالة عبارة عن دراسة معمقة لمواقف طالب الشعب التقنية في الجامعة الجزائرية تجاه اللغتين الفرنسية و االنجليزية و السياسة اللغوية الجزائرية فيما يخص هاتين اللغتين و استعماالتهما في التعليم العالي باإلضافة إلى استكشاف العوامل التي الكامنة وراء هذه المواقف. لدراسة مواقف أو توجهات الطلبة تم إتباع منهج مختلط باالعتماد على وسيلتين مباشرتين لجم البيانات تمثلتا في استبيان متعدد من حيث نوع األسئلة بهدف استقصاء مواقف الطلبة باإلضافة إلى مقابلة شبه مفتوحة لتحديد أسباب هذه المواقف. مجتم الدراسة تمثل في طلبة سنة ثانية ماستر لشعبة علم األحياء بجامعة حمة لخضر الواقعة بوالية وادي سوف حيث تم اختيار عينة عشوائية تكونت من 37 طالب لإلجابة على االستبيان و تم اختيار 6 من هؤالء الطلبة عشوائيا بغر إجراء المقابلة. تشير نتائج الدراسة إلى أن مواقف الطلبة تجاه اللغة الفرنسية معقد و سلبية بصفة عامة على عكس مواقفهم تجاه اللغة االنجليزية و التي كانت جد ايجابية باإلضافة إلى عدم رضاهم عن السياسات اللغوية الحالية المتعلقة باللغات األجنبية. بنا ًء على هذه النتائج ، تم طرح عد توصيات للتخطيط اللغوي
