Abstract: The aim of the study is to improve removal of organic compounds dissolved in water by the process of coagulation-flocculation with coagulant alone and in combination with a material adsorbent. Optimization was to use the aluminum sulfate in combination with activated carbon, for a maximum removal of organic compounds characterized by low and high molecular weight. Jar Test trials were conducted in laboratory on dissolved organic compounds (phloroglucinol, pyromellitic acid, humic substances) in distilled water and then in natural water (water dam Foum -El- Gherza). Many reaction parameters were as varied as the dose of coagulant, the pH of aqueous middle and the dose of powdered and granular activated carbon . Interactions of organic compounds in the presence of coagulant alone or combined with activated carbon revealed several mechanisms. The main mechanisms would be either a physical adsorption, an exchange of ligand or complexation on the surface floc of aluminium hydroxide. The results indicate that the efficiency of the process of coagulation-flocculation for the removal of organic compounds is more reliable with the presence of activated carbon that with aluminum sulfate alone. Especially that powdered activated carbon has an impact significant improvement in yields of disposal and the economic aspect of the process.
