Exploring the Intersection of Trauma and Defense Mechanisms in the Character of Severus Snape in J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter Series

Abstract

This dissertation analyzes the character of Severus Snape in the Harry Potter series using Freudian defense mechanisms and trauma theory. Snape is a complex figure who played a significant role in the series, and this research aims to investigate his hidden motives and behaviors. By applying Freud's theories, this study sheds light on Snape's inner thoughts and motivations in in the last two books of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. The research examines how Snape's childhood trauma shaped his adult personality and the defense mechanisms he employed to cope with it. Through this analysis, readers gain a deeper understanding of Snape's character and the reasons behind his questionable actions throughout the events of the novels.
