Abstract: | Algeria has numerous industrial remains from different periods, including those from the French colonization era. However, the current state of this industrial heritage and the lack of scientific research do not ensure its prosperous future. In order to efficiently valorise this heritage, identification, inventory, and classification work is necessary. This study aims to examine this issue by analysing storage structures inherited from the French colonization era in Algeria. Theoretical, historical, and techno-architectural approaches were used to develop an understanding of the research subject, the historical context, and the colonial agrarian strategy towards the exploitation of Algerian land and agricultural resources, which led to the creation of these Algerian grain docks and silos. In this context, we described the architectural and technical characteristics of Hennebique's reinforced concrete structures, as well as grain handling procedures, with a particular focus on our case study of the grain silos in Sétif. The objective is to highlight the significant historical, architectural, and utilitarian values of these heritage elements, as a first step towards their patrimonialisation, preservation, and management. The originality and contribution of this research lie in the recognition and awareness of the heritage value of these industrial historical buildings inherited from the French colonization era in Algeria. This recognition could stimulate discussions on important heritage issues and encourage initiatives to valorize and preserve what remains of this industrial heritage. The results of this study have implications at several levels, including the memorial, historical, educational, architectural, technical, and economic aspects. By preserving the collective memory of this agricultural industry and a sustainable system of maintenance, storage, and conservation of cereals, which has deeply marked our rural, urban, and port landscapes, particularly through the dominance of the forms and volumes of these installations, we offer a precious legacy to future generations. By recognizing and preserving these landmarks rich in collective memory, we contribute to the preservation of our common heritage |
