Abstract: This doctoral thesis investigates the seismic performance of a reinforced concrete structure located in a high seismicity area, specifically focusing on the effects of infill walls’ layout in plan and/or elevation on seismic performance. Through the nonlinear static method (Pushover analysis), the seismic behavior of the structure is meticulously evaluated under different infill wall layout configurations. The evaluation encompasses crucial parameters such as capacity curves, absorbed energy, inter-story displacement, and overall performance levels. In addition, the thesis examines the impact of infill walls on torsional effects within the structure through a detailed linear dynamic analysis, using macro-modeling techniques incorporating a fiber discretized plastic hinge for precisely represent the behavior of infill walls. The results highlight the importance of infill walls in improving lateral stiffness, emphasizing that a non-uniform arrangement can significantly degrade building performance after an earthquake. An increase in absorbed energy causes significant inter-story displacement, thus increasing the risks of structural deterioration or collapse. Moreover, random and asymmetric arrangements of infill walls introduce additional torsional forces, particularly noticeable in structures with an uneven distribution of walls on opposite sides. The absence of walls at the ground floor level can aggravate the uneven stiffness, potentially leading to the occurrence of soft story phenomena. These results highlight the importance of carefully considering the arrangement of infill walls in seismic design to ensure structural integrity and resilience.
